Our classmate John "Jock" Newbold, of Carlisle, PA, passed away at home on May 11, 2022. Click here for the obituary.

Jock came to Princeton from the Haverford School in Haverford, PA along with six other '66 class members (Jeff Reichel, Walt Smedley, Burt Gay(d), Rob Johnson(d), Turk Thacher, and Douglas Walters).  He left Princeton freshman year. Walt Smedley writes that Jock was captain of the baseball team, and

"I read from our Haverford School 50th Reunion Book that after leaving Princeton, for which 'he was not suited,' he graduated from Rollins College in 1968 and became a Navy pilot instructor as a career. He wrote that he was married for, then in 2012, 42 years with two children and their married families living near them in Carlisle, PA, with growing families of their own.  It’s interesting that he signed off from his 2012 letter, 'I’m looking forward to seeing old classmates and sharing stories'."

Jeff Reichel has additional memories, "I have seen John (or Jock) several times, including at Haverford School reunions. He completed college (elsewhere).... Always a nice man, we have had no recent contact for years.... I was one of his roomies freshman year."

John met his wife April while they were students at Rollins in Winter Park, FL, where John majored in biology. After graduating from Rollins in 1968, John went to OCS at the US Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL. April and John celebrated their 50th anniversary with a vow renewal in 2019. April passed away in 2020. They are survived by a large extended family, including his son Jefferys and daughter Virginia Tilden, and five grandchildren, Dylan and Cloe Newbold, and Noah, Jocelyn, and Sylar Tilden, all of Carlisle, PA.

His community service included serving as a volunteer for the Cumberland County (PA) CASA Program (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children). Their 2009-10 newsletter has the following information about John as well as a group photo (top of page 2) in which John appears in the back center.

"John Newbold is originally from the Philadelphia Main Line area. After graduating from college he joined the Navy and became an instructor pilot stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. John came to the Carlisle area in 1973 to fly for what was then Masland Carpets. He worked as a probation officer for Cumberland County for 5 years and flew as a helicopter pilot for 23 years for the Army National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap. John also taught for 5 years at Vision Quest, a residential treatment facility for at risk kids. He is an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church."
