PETER CALDWELL WYLIE (1945-2014)

 

 

Pete died on June 26.


He graduated from St. Paul’s School, where rowing was his favorite sport. At Princeton he majored in Latin American Studies, belonged to Tower Club, and lettered in diving. He was a member of the musical group The Shades and performed with them at the 1964 World’s Fair.


Following graduation from at the University of Virginia Law School, Pete entered the Navy JAG Corps. His first assignment was Viet Nam, where he earned a Bronze Star with Combat V. His wife Clair reports that he requested duty in Viet Nam to honor our classmate Brooke Halsey, who died in combat there. Later Navy assignments took him to London; Gaeta, Italy; and Washington, D.C., where he completed several tours, including service as Navy liaison to Congress.

When he retired in 1994, he became secretary and general counsel of the Military Officers Association of America, a leading veterans organization. Health concerns forced him to retire in 2009.

 

Besides his wife Clair, Pete is survived by son Peter and daughter Jamie and by his sister, retired Navy Captain Betsy Wylie. The Class extends its sympathy to them and to Pete’s extended family.
