Frank J. Biondi, Jr. (1945 - 2019)

Frank's wife Carol sent the news of Frank's November 25 death on behalf of the entire family (Carol, Anne Biondi Simonds ’97, and Jane Biondi Munna ’00).

"Frank passed away early this morning at home after a year+ long battle with metastatic bladder cancer. He fought hard until the end and spent his final days surrounded by family and friends. We are devastated and will remember and honor him forever.

"Thank you to all of you for your prayers, messages, thoughts and love over these last 16 months. It meant the world to him and to all of us. We are so grateful for each of you always, but especially at Thanksgiving time.

"Memorial services will be held in January in Los Angeles and in August on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts [Information below]. If desired, memorial contributions can be made in Frank’s honor to the Ethical Culture Fieldston School for the benefit of The Biondi Family Scholarship Fund (online or by mail: Ethical Culture Fieldston School, P.O. Box 28552 New York, NY 10087-8552).

"The LA Times just posted a wonderful article about Frank, which you can read here."

In addition to the Los Angeles Times, other major news organizations wrote excellent obituaries, including:

The New York Times
Variety
The Wall Street Journal (subscription required)

The New Yorker profiled Frank in this January 16, 1995 article (subscription required).

Princeton classmates and professional colleagues remember that of all his wonderful traits, no other description than “gentlemanly” fits Frank better. Frank played 150 lb football at Princeton and was the stolen base leader on the baseball team. In later years, he served on the University's Board of Trustees. On the lighter side, when we were undergraduates, Frank was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of pop music. As was pointed out, he knew even the B side of hit singles.

PAW Memorial

FRANK JOSEPH BIONDI, JR.

Frank died at his Los Angeles home on November 25, 2019, the result of bladder cancer. Publications across the country reported and lamented his passing. The headline of The New York Times obituary was typical: “Frank Biondi, Quiet Powerhouse in Entertainment Industry, Dies at 74.” The accounts were uniform in emphasizing Frank’s gentlemanly manner and unfailing civility, along with his considerable business success.

Frank grew up in Livingston, New Jersey, and graduated from Livingston High, where he was baseball team captain, All-State in that sport, and Boys State delegate. At Princeton he majored in psychology, belonged to Cannon Club, and was baseball centerfielder and lightweight football halfback.

After earning an MBA from Harvard in 1968, Frank began a spectacular business career that would include, among other significant accomplishments, leadership of HBO, Viacom, and Universal Studios.

Frank was elected Princeton Alumni Trustee at Large in 1995, the same year he received the Robert L. Peters, Jr. ’42 Award for distinguished achievements in his field.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol Oughton Biondi; daughters, Anne Biondi Simonds ’97 and Jane Biondi Munna ’00; six grandchildren; and brother, Robert Biondi. The Class extends its heartfelt condolences to them.

Tom Norris attended the January 11 service and writes:

"Dear Classmates:

I attended as Frank’s roommate his memorial service this weekend in Santa Monica. I have never been so saddened at the loss of one we knew so long ago. I had known Frank longer than anyone else there, but most everyone else had come to know him better as he had become very special to all of them in there lives. He made it in a world with integrity by placing his family first and unseating his many accomplishments. He was so fortunate to have Carol and his 2 daughters and grandchildren to keep him grounded. There were so many people from many walks of life with whom he has been an inspiration. It was a privilege to be able to attend."
